Nov 12, 2008 New News Page
It has been a few days since we
have had an update. This is because the team of Airdriebmx.com
site developers huddled in dark offices at several secret
locations have been frantically writing code with blood shot
eyes and raw fingertips, consuming massive amounts of Tim
Horton's coffee to develop this
new page.
This is a news paged served offsite. Why did we do this you ask? We did it because this mode of news page allows us, to allow you to link with us via your cell phone or instantly be advised of updates without having to purposely visit airdriebmx.com. Or add us as a gadget onto your igoogle home page. (We highgly rcommend igoogle it is totally cool). It also will allow us to ad slide shows easier and link to movies and publish surveys more easily. Also this mode of newspage will allow for more remote publishing, meaning that when the team of site maintenance people are on the road for races we can update this page in near real time from anywhere in the world, this will allow us to get you your news faster. And lastly this page allows for you to give us feedback more easily thus allowing us to make a better webpresence for you. I hope it works. I hope you, the readers like it. Just hit "New News Page" to go check it out. The previous version of the news page will always be available so that you can go back and read past stories any time, just follow the link to the right while on the new page. Cheers Nov 7, 2008 Here is some 2006 vintage stuff but still quite interesting. This is an interview JerryMania did with Johan Lidstrom the BMX Coordinator for the UCI. It is still interesting and relevant: A) because we are patiently waiting for the ABA US Grands so there is not much else to talk about and B) because it touches on how and when and why the sport of BMX made it into the Olympics and some of the thoughts surrounding those talks. Nov 6, 2008 This is a shameless plug for GT Bikes but it is a slick little video. And GT has been good to the sport over the years. Go youtubing and search 'BMX Race Training' for some off-season ideas.
Nov 5, 2008 Work continues on "The Building". We are ready or nearly ready to run the power and air-line to it. Anyone with access to a ditch-witch that could be donated to the club for an afternoon before the frost sets in is asked to contact Craig Sabiston. We will happily put a link and logo onto our website for any donations of materials, labor or equipment, like this. If you or someone you know can donate the equipment and an operator then so much the better. - Thank you in advance it is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Nov 5, 2008 Check it out ... It is not often one of our riders gets his own thread on a forum, especially a BC forum. To make it doubly interesting is the fact that it was started by one of his competitors from BC. It sheds some light on the size of Jim Brown's accomplishment in making AA pro. Nov 5, 2008 I think this MUST be the first BMXer to get his own stamp...Maris Strombergs Scores BMX Gold Medal Stamp!
MARIS STROMBERGS, the first ever Elite Men Olympic Champion BMX from Latvia, has his own "stamp" now. This month the Latvian BMX Federation celebrated their hero in the city of Valmiera, Latvia where the government officials presented the "stamp" with Olympic Champ Maris Strombergs on it. BMX finally gets the recognition which it deserves. Fantastic Nov 5, 2008
Nov 3, 2008 Indoor cyclo-cross this weekend in Springbank. I have never been to one but it sounds like fun. Go here for the details. Nov 1, 2008 Those interested in staying on their bike are encouraged to look into the two programs being offered at the Olympic Speedskating Oval at the University of Calgary Cycling Center. Running from now until March or April (I believe for ages 12-19), both are coached by Damian Bissett who has raced Elite/A Pro for years in Canada and lived, raced and coached in the US for several years too. Damian is an excellent coach with long term goals that will keep him in BMX and coaching for years to come. For more information contact Stephen Burke, the program administrator. Unfortunately some info on the website is a tad outdated. At the Oval Program is the BMX/Downhill Development Program ($600.00) that runs Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and is a preparatory program to graduate these riders to the Performance Program. The BMX/Downhill Performance Program ($840.00) runs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (7-9pm), and Saturday (10am-2pm). The performance program is more intense with the emphasis on preparing high level challenge, Jr. Elite and Elite class riders for racing Elite/Pro - and winning and moving on to the National BMX Team. The emphasis here will shift depending on the month but right now it is focusing on conditioning and training on how to train with discussion about nutrition, stretching, warm-up, cool down and cycling psychology. There is much more to it than this capsulated version but I highly recommend it if you are serious about your cycling. There are a few spots remaining available in each program so act fast as they will be capping both programs soon. Oct 31, 2008 Riders signing new contracts: The folks at
Oct 31, 2008 The BC Elite Riders recently did some performance testing. BC cycling recently moved their center from UVIC to Camosun college (which is a cool private college in Victoria with a proud history) so this is the first year that they have done any testing at the new facility. Hear what Olympian Scott Erwood and Mischa Parttridge had to say about it here. Oct 30, 2008 In case you were at all curious about the
format and the finer points of how the And I have heard people say that we don't call Jr. riders professional, but professional is defined as:
Oct 29, 2008 Thunder Bay BMX Association has become
Ontario's second Oct 28, 2008 The CCA has released their almost final
rankings for the 2008 season. It is 'Almost' final because
even though there was an update for October it still only includes
results to approximately July. (WT_????) Go here
to see the Airdrie riders that are currently in the top 10. Oct 27, 2008 AirdrieBMX.com has a new 'Printable' calendar for 2009 races. It can be accessed through the Schedule page. Currently it contains the CCA/CBA WNS Series, The Alberta Cup series, Western US ABA Series and all Continental UCI dates. The Canadian ABA dates and our own district dates will be added once they are announced. If you know of any dates that may have gotten forgotten please let me know. Oct 25, 2008 Airdrie BMX's Ken Cools Signs 4 Year Agreement As Coach For Bike New Zealand
Coach Cools sez....."Well it’s official, yesterday I signed my contract and am now the High Performance BMX Coach for New Zealand for the next 4 years. It puts me thru ’till just after the London Olympics in 2012. I’m pretty happy with everything and am really excited to get my family moved to Auckland and start helping out the country with some good coaching. I will be in charge of all the BMX stuff for the High Performance team and will also be working with BMX New Zealand on a few different things as well. Our arrival date into NZ will be the first week of December, a few weeks later then we first anticipated." "Separate from my job with BikeNZ, I will be running my Camp Cools training camps throughout the country to make training available for everyone. If you are a track member and would like for me to come to your track, please email me so we can get the wheels turning." "For the faithful Canadians who have supported me over the years, I will be in Canada for about 6 weeks in the summer where I will be doing select High Performance camps as well as my usual Training Clinics. I will only have a few weekends open so it would be a good idea for tracks to RSVP me ASAP."
And in Canada we are looking for a new national team coach......things that make you hmmmm. Oct 24, 2008 The website Schedule page has been drastically updated. Jr and Elite riders note that your first chance in the new year to get those UCI points to qualify for Australia is Jan 23-25 in Guthrie, OK. Start planning your winter / summer for
2009. Racing starts in 10 weeks.* Oct 23, 2008 Further to the announcement below of ABA tracks hosting UCI races next year in the US. They will (of course) be running the random cadence that we use at Airdrie BMX at those UCI events but they have no intentions of forcing their tracks to change to that cadence nor will they be running that cadence at their non-UCI national events. Local tracks are free to use whatever cadence they feel best suits their riders. AND As of last weekend in Florida Airdrie BMX rider: Jim Brown is officially AA Pro This makes Jim only the fifth in Canadian history, behind (Ontario's Bob Rowley and Airdrie BMX's Ken Cools and old schooler's Jack Hutton and Pete Zablotny) to achieve this. So next time you see "The Hardest Working Rider in BMX" be sure to give him a Congratulations!!!! Oct 22, 2008 Ok this is kinda cool.... this could be the first BMX rapper out there, this is Kelly Kelly. Oct 22, 2008 I sense a disturbance in the force....for the first time ABA tracks in the US will be hosting UCI races. Scroll down a bit and you get a sense for the importance of hosting these UCI races as Airdrie BMX is listed here. For the official release from USACycling go here. This taken from BMXmania: BREAKING NEWS! U.S. DATES FOR 2008-09 BMX CONTINENTAL CALENDAR & NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCED Desoto, Texas to Host 2009 USA Cycling BMX National Championships
For the first time, UCI Continental Calendar events in the United States will be contested at American Bicycle Association (ABA) affiliated tracks. The ABA will also host the third-annual USA Cycling BMX National Championships, which will return to Metroplex BMX in Desoto, Texas on March 21. The 2009 USA Cycling BMX National Championships will highlight the weekend in Desoto which features three consecutive days of world-class competition. The American-only national championships are bookended by a pair of international UCI races. The weekend will begin with the sixth Continental Calendar race of the season on Friday, March 20, followed by the national championships on Saturday and another UCI contest on Sunday, March 22. The 2008-09 North American calendar opened in Canada last summer with an event in Kingston, Ontario on July 5. After the New Year, the calendar will visit four U.S. locations before the triple weekend in Desoto. Guthrie, Ok. will host the season’s second race on Jan. 24 followed by dates in Perris, Calif. on Feb. 7, Oldsmar, Fla. on Feb. 21 and Phoenix on Mar. 7. After the weekend in Desoto, the calendar continues with another Canadian date in Airdrie, Alberta on May 23, followed by the final two U.S. stops in Milford, Del. on June 13 and Rockford, Ill. on June 20. All Continental Calendar events carry Category-3 designation according to the UCI. Only the world championships (Category-1) and Supercross World Cup events (Category-2) offer more international ranking points to competitors. The 2009 USA Cycling BMX National Championships will be a Category-4 event. Once again, the USA Cycling BMX National Championships will provide an opportunity for Challenge Class athletes to qualify for the 2009 UCI BMX World Challenge, scheduled for July 23-26 in Adelaide, Australia. USA Cycling will publish its qualification procedures in the coming days. “The ABA is excited to work alongside USA Cycling to host all of the Continental Calendar events in the U.S. next season”, commented BMX Association Trustee and Vice President of the ABA Bernard A. Anderson. “With the recent success of American BMX athletes in Beijing, these events will continue to facilitate the development of international BMX superstars. It is also a great honor to once again host the USA Cycling BMX National Championships in Desoto. Metroplex BMX has proven to be one of the best BMX facilities in the world and will provide an excellent venue for USA Cycling to choose its 2009 Challenge Class world championship team.” For detailed event information regarding all UCI Continental Calendar events in the U.S. and to register for each event, visit www.ababmx.com. 2008-09 UCI North American BMX Continental Calendar: July 5: Kingston, Ontario (CAN) Jan. 24: Guthrie, Ok. (USA) Feb. 7: Perris, Calif. (USA) Feb. 21: Oldsmar, Fla. (USA) Mar 7: Phoenix, Ariz. (USA) Mar. 20: Desoto, Texas (USA) Mar. 22: Desoto, Texas (USA) May 23: Airdrie, Alberta (CAN) June 13: Milford, Del. (USA) June 20: Rockford, Ill. (USA)
2009 USA Cycling BMX National Championships: March 21: Desoto, Texas Oct 22, 2008 BC Cycling has announced their 2009 Provincial Team. Note that they start their development teams at age 6! And they have a multi-tiered system of youth development that is intended to feed the Elite level system in the future. I would say it has been working for them since they definitely have been developing some seriously fast riders. Also note that their team selection criteria is straight forward and simple. Oct 20, 2008 The Alberta BMX AGM went last Saturday and Airdrie BMX President Tim Croft is now also President of Alberta BMX, apparently coaching hockey, running a BMX association, and catching bad guys all day was not enough to keep him going. There were significant changes made to next year's race structure, and pro payout. All Airdrie riders and parents and advised to go to the AB BMX Website to become aware of them. The most noticeable is that we are going to a two race weekend format like our West National Series that is organized by the CBA. The race schedule for next summer was also resolved, and it is posted as well. Oct 19, 2008 Well the plot thickens on the last day of racing at the ABA Disney Cup. Pat Lebel makes the main today in FL and takes six place. Jim did finish in the top 8 of A pro taking second today, though it is posted incorrectly on the ABA website. Jim is still waiting to hear from the ABA if he has is win $$ to make the move to double A. As soon as I hear, it will be posted as this is pretty exciting news for an Airdrie Rider. Today Simon M takes a 4th place. There were 19 riders in Simon's 15expert class, 32 riders in A Pro with Patrick and Jim, and 26 riders in AA Pro. Well done men!!!!! It is VERY exciting when we get to see riders from our home track doing well abroad. Here is Jim and most of Pat from BMXmania.com
Oct 18, 2008 Day 2 of three National Races is done in Florida and Jim Brown takes second. That should make him AA Pro and only the third rider in Canadian History to make that level of racer. Not to be outdone Simon Meili takes 2nd as well in 15 expert, amongst a field of 20 riders. Way to go Simon. And 4th in the 15-16open. By the way both of these guys are doin' it for Supercross. Bill Ryan (the head honcho at Supercross) seems to like us Canucks. This race in Florida is a huge event. 35 A pros, 26 AA pros, riders from 40 states, 3 provinces and 10 countries are there. So this is not a small feat for these riders. I heard that 'Scrumpscious' Patrick Lebel did did well in motos today, except he unfortunately he did not make the main and must have lost out in 1/4's or 1/2's. Ilana Just from Red Deer took third in 13 girls Oct 18, 2008 More photos from Chilliwack have been uploaded here. Oct 17, 2008 Florida - Results - Airdrie Riders Simon Meili - 4th in 15-16 open Oct 14, 2008 Pursuant to the provisions of
the Society Act of Alberta and the By-Laws of the Alberta Location: Oct 13, 2008 This coming weekend Airdrie Rider Jim Brown will be in Florida for the ABA Disney National. This year, unlike last year, it will actually be off the Disney grounds in Kissimee. This year will also be an indoor set of three National Races. Next year it will be back in Disney World at a permanent BMX track in the Wide World of Sport Park. Jim is only one win or two podium finishes away from reaching AA Pro - the highest level of racing in the world. Watch all the racing live Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the web at: http://www.go211.com/u/disneycup08. Oct 13, 2008 The I's were dotted and the T's crossed last Thursday on a new lease in Victoria, BC. Victoria BMX, sanctioned by the ABA, will take over the track and facilities that were used for the UCI World Championships of 2007. It is good to know that fantastic track and facility will be used. When we were in Victoria for their ABA National Race in July (see note below) it was sad to see such an awesome (the World's) track grown over with weeds. In the latest issue of BMXer Magazine there is a picture and caption of Airdrie's own Dayton Peterson getting airborne at the above mentioned race in Victoria. The issue before this current one also included a picture and caption of Alex Sailer. BMXer is a great mag and one of only a couple that air dedicated to BMX Racing. Oct 12, 2008 Day 2 in Chilliwack has wrapped. Once again there were 104 motos with a little over 600 riders with 40+ riders from Alberta. The ABA Canadian National Series is THE series for riders from BC. This is why at the last National Series race in Kelowna they drew 485 riders. In BC they also have a Provincial Cup Series (just like ours) but it is not attended in the numbers that this series is or the numbers that we draw for our provincial series. Generally speaking folks in BC anti up the $$ for one set of races and this is it. This is also a huge factor in why the CCA/CBA West National Series is so minimally attended by BC riders. So if you want to race against BC riders in mass this is the series to race, and this race is the Grandaddy of them all with riders from AZ, TX, UT, CA, OR, ID, WA, CO, AB, and of course BC there. From yesterday's list (below) here are today's main makers: Mixed Age Open Classes: Class: ( 20") A Pros: Women's Pro: Oct 11, 2008 Day 1 of the Chilliwack Canadian ABA Grands is in the books. There were 111 motos, with 442 Canadian Riders, 215 riders from the United States for a total of 657 riders. Of the Canadian riders there were 41 from Alberta. And the 12 Airdrie Riders killed it today with these excellent results: New to the ABA: * = results unconfirmed Oct 10, 2008 The ABA Canadian Grands run this weekend in the sunny and not so warm Fraser Valley of BC (Chilliwack). The Grands are run on a neutral site each year, indoors, building a new track just for the event. This eliminates the issues of potentially adverse weather and no one has home track advantage, and there is lots of parking for the big race. Oct 8, 2008 I previously missed this huge honor. On Oct 5 at our annual awards banquet / riders party, Sammy Cools was bestowed the "Rider's Choice Award". A much deserved accolade in her storied repertoire. Not only is Sam a champion on the track but if you have ever had the chance to talk to this amazing young lady you quickly realize that she is a champion off the track as well. Oct 8, 2008 Airdrie BMX is blessed with perhaps the highest concentration of Elite, Jr. Elite, A and AA pro riders of any track in Canada. With that please note that some of these riders will be on our track at un-posted times. This does not mean that you are not welcome to come and ride with them. No one will be turned away at the gates as long as the track is open and you have a paid membership, however it is not a babysitting service either and for safety reasons we ask that a parent stay at the track at all times. So if you see the lights on and people riding do not be nervous about showing up. Keep in mind though that these are Elite athletes that literally travel the world for racing at a very high level. So if you arrive and they are not talking and chatting you up, you must understand that they may have a huge race coming up that they are focused on, it is not an insult to you or an attempt to make you or your child feel uncomfortable. Keep in mind that some of these riders are at the pinnacle of the sport and let me ask you this: When is last time you or your child were invited onto the ice for a full on practice with the Calgary Flames or asked to go for a round of golf with Stephen Ames? Oct 7, 2008 In case you did not get it, cannot find it, or lost it here is copy of our 2008 season evaluation form for racing and coaching. Please fill one out and mail it to the address on the home page (if you wish to remain anonymous) or scan and email it to President or VP. Oct 7, 2008 Congratulations to all Airdrie BMX riders (big and small) for a great year of racing. Our annual awards banquet / riders party was held Sunday Oct. 5 at Balzac Community Hall. I know the coaches had a difficult time determining winners in many of these categories. Once the votes were tallied the victors and nominees were determined. And here is our list of District Top
riders. These are the riders that made at least 18 of our 25
district races this summer: and as an addition to this list we have:
Sorry we missed you the first time around Buddy. These riders received awesome new 3in1 jackets with their names embroidered on them for their high degree of club support, dedication, and participation. WAY TO GO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU. The 2008 AGM is in the books for Airdrie BMX. Here is your new(ish) Board of Directors: (since Airdrie BMX has board positions of two year terms half of the board positions would remain as is.) President - Tim Croft Vice President - Shane Peterson Treasurer - Deborah Puttick Secretary - Christine Quennell Track Operator - Cindy O'Hara Track Director - Craig Sabiston Concession - Yvonne Paulson Promotions - Michelle Kruger Volunteer Coordinator - Krysta Bennett Head Coach - Will Jones Thank you for stepping up Heading to Chilliwack next weekend? for the Canadian ABA Grands, if you are new to ABA racing, I recommend you go here and get the license application and fill it out before arriving. It will save you some time in what will not doubt be a LONG line-up for registration, (though the ABA calls it 'sign-ups'). And since it is going to save you time it will save me time because I will likely be behind you. Airdrie BMX had two members attend the Las Vegas Interbike08 Show last week. What is Interbike you ask? It is only the largest bicycle trade show going open only to industry insiders. Who were the two members you ask? Sammy Cools was a big hit at the show working the Supercross Booth and none other than our own race night announcer Christine Roth/Quennell was in attendance too. Why was she there you ask? Let's just say she is the reason that Las Vegas has THAT particular tourism slogan. She was having fun, going to meetings and hob-nobbing with the goober-smoochers of BMX, BUT she was very well behaved, apparently. This is her and Mikey Day with his silver medal in BMX from the Beijing Olympics.
Check out the updated Photo/Video page in case you missed Airdrie BMX on CBC last month. This is still the coolest thing going, so cool it is worth re-posting - that is Airdrie BMX's very own Jim Brown in the blue. "Jimmy is the hardest working guy in BMX" according to Colin Stiles of Stile Industry Videos. And he is an all-round good guy who can be seen around Airdrie doing sprints AND on the track most days the weather allows. AND He is just inches (or $$'s) away from going AA Pro. Jim would be only the third Canadian in history (behind Ontario's Bob Rowley and Airdrie BMX's Ken Cools) to make it to this highest level of professional BMX racing. Wish list: If anyone in the club membership has access to once of these (or similar) for track work, the club would be very appreciative. This is a piece of equipment that we have ongoing need for. Also in the spring we will be needing
one of these
as well as the above. Please keep these in mind and don't be afraid to ask a friend or neighbor. Airdrie BMX Immediate Needs: Throughout the season and off-season we will be posting here some club 'wish-list' items and 'need-list' items. Since we are a not for profit society we are always greatly appreciative of donated goods, services or cash. Right now we are working on finishing of "The Building". Thank you to Ron and Craig for getting the siding on it. Next task is to run power/air-line/phone-line to it, including the trenching from the existing concession/registration building. We MAY be moving the air-compressor into the new building too this has yet to be determined. So Airdrie BMX has an immediate need for: 1/ a Master Electrician who is licensed to operate a
business in Airdrie to obtain the electrical permit from
City Hall and oversee the work. Airdrie BMX is
considered 'institutional' in the eyes of the city. If you can help please step up and contact Shane, Jake, Tim, or Carolyn. Airdriebmx.com has a new 'Classifieds'
page.

They want to do a story on “the community of BMX” as a whole and also sensing the tight knit community that we have at Airdrie BMX and Alberta BMX, they will then edit and then show as the preview/introduction to the semis and finals the next day when Sam and Scott get Canada medals. This is an awsome opportunity for BMX to get some National TV coverage and you just might get to be on TV. Just a couple of photos from the USA training facility in California. Go Big or Go Home fully applies here. Donny Robinson boosting the big step-up July 15 Camp Cools in Airdrie I wanted to let you all know that I will be teaching a camp on the Airdrie track on the 24th and 25th of July (Thursday/Friday) from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. Each day will be at a cost of $65 per rider and is a great way to spend a day on your bike with some of the fastest pros and experts in Canada. As the date gets closer I will have a list of trainers that will be in attendance which I will post on my website, www.kencools.com. Depending on the size of the camp I will have about 6 trainers on hand to help me with the kids. The Thursday will be dedicated to Beginner/Novice riders and our focus will be to teach the kids new skills and to have fun. There will be no expert riders allowed on the track (other than my trainers) so the kids will be in a fun atmosphere and shouldn’t feel intimidated by faster riders. When kids are having fun they tend to learn the most so on this day, fun will be the key word. Friday’s camp will be for the Intermediate/Expert riders and this camp will be geared on pushing each athlete to the next skill level. My group of trained trainers is great in helping riders achieve their goals and helping them with there confidence. I will be doing a few different drills on this day to really push each athletes skill set and help them attain what they are wanting, to be a better rider. For those who don’t know me, I have been teaching my Camp Cools Camps for the past 15 years, 7 of which I lived in the USA. I am currently the Olympic coach for the New Zealand High Performance group and have more experience at teaching camps to all skills and ages than anyone else in BMX. I have spent the past 5 months on the road with my athletes getting them ready for Beijing and this is the only opportunity that I have to get on your track. I hope to see you all there and if you have any questions then please feel free to email me at kencools@shaw.ca. Have a great day and thank you for your time. If anyone is interested you can contact Ken directly. July 2 Volunteers needed for the Provincial Weekend As you are all aware we will be hosting a Provincial race the weekend of July 11, 12, 13. Junior and Elite rider information for 2009 VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
As of today the 16 year olds have the right to move to junior or stay 16 until the end of the season. Our second year juniors' must move to Elite or move to the Challenge . The riders need to understand if they are planning Australia they will need all the UCI points they can get to make the National worlds team as championship riders can only go as National team members, or stay challenge. This is a UCI rule and a CCA amendment about the second year Junior's. If the Championship riders do not earn UCI points they are eligible for a down grade to challenge for the worlds but if they so much as have 1 uci point they can not down grade. All riders changing Cat. will lose there Alberta Cup and CBA western National points, However if they raced the Morley races they still count as a Qualifier. 2008 World Championships, China All of our riders at the Worlds get back today and bring a couple of World plates with them.
